It only seems like 5 minutes ago that Portsmouth were lifting the FA Cup at Wembley. However, a lot has happened since that magical day in 2008. The Chimes went on to play in another cup final in 2010, but since then financial troubles due to poor ownership has seen the South coast club fall all the way down the league and left languishing in League 2. Now though a new wave of hope is dawning upton Fratton Park. The now fan owned club experienced final day drama which saw them snatch the title away from both Plymouth Argyle and Doncaster Rovers. It capped a remarkable turnaround in fortunes as it looked highly unlikely going into the run in. Pompey were always in the hunt and made sure of promotion two weeks earlier. Results went the blues way and even the final day wasn’t short of tension as Doncaster looked have clinched the crown before conceded late goals to hand the edge to Portsmouth who comfortably beat Cheltenham 6-1.
The feel good factor might not stop there for the newly crowned League 2 Champions. They are on the verge of a potential takeover by Hollywood tycoon Michael Eisner. Whether a big money takeover works out well remains to be seen, but for now a new found breathe of confidence is blowing through the streets of Portsmouth as the club are well truly on the up.
