On This Day…. 23rd Of May

Another selection of footballing memories.

  • 1973 – Liverpool lifted the UEFA despite losing 2-0 to Borussia Monchangladbach. The reds had won the earlier leg 3-0 two weeks earlier and it proved to enough to secure the Anfield club their first of many European trophies.
  • 1984 – Tottenham drew 1-1 in Begium in the 2nd leg of the UEFA Cup Final. Anderlect led after an hour, but Roberts netted a late equalizer. Spurs were successful after a dramatic penalty shootout which finished 4-3.
  • 2001 – Champions League Final. Played at the San Siro in Milan, this was game full of penalties. Valencia took the lead from the spot after only 3 minutes from Mendietta. Effenberg equalized from another spot kick early in the 2nd half for Bayern Munich. The game finished 1-1 and it was the Germans that triumphed 5-4 in the shootout.
  • 2007 – Liverpool faced A.C. Milan in the Champions League final for the 2nd time in 3 years. The drama from Istanbul in the previous meeting was unlikely to be matched. The Rossineri no doubt had revenge on their mind and took the lead on the stroke of half time through Inzaghi. They then doubled their lead late on as Inzaghi added to his earlier goal. Nerves were jangling though as Kuyt pulled back a late goal for the reds. However, this time it was too little too late.
