It’s incredible to think it’s 27 years ago today that the 1990 World Cup kicked off in Italy. I for the one remember it so well.
The first match saw the footballing greats of Argentina face African minnows Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions were competing at their 2nd World Cup Finals and up against the holders you would be forgiven to expected one outcome….. A win for the white and sky blues.
In front of 73,780 at the San Siro in Milan… Cameroon had other ideas. After a goalless first half, The Cameroon were riding their luck further after Andre Kana-Biyik saw red just after the hour mark. But a surprise that shocked world football was still to come. With 67 minutes gone…Francois Oman-Biyik write himself into World Cup folklore by scoring the only goal of the game and sending people in places such as Yaounde and Douala dilerious. There was still a late twist as Benjamin Massing received a 2nd yellow, but the 9 men held on for a famous win and also won the group before eventually succumbing to England at the quarter final stage.
